The Endless Possibilities of the Negative Edge Pool

Pool with no edge overlooking beach and ocean

A negative edge pool, also known as a vanishing edge or infinity edge pool, is a luxurious swimming pool designed to either create the illusion of water extending seamlessly into the horizon of falling off, or disappearing, over the pool’s edge. This stunning visual effect is achieved by allowing one or more edges of the pool to overflow into a catch basin below, where the water is recirculated back into the pool. The result is a breathtaking view that enhances the beauty of the surrounding landscape, making negative edge pools a popular choice for high-end residential properties, resorts and hotels.

The Aesthetic Allure

One of the most alluring aspects of a negative edge pool is its ability to blend with its surroundings. An infinity pool, or vanishing edge pool, can create either a seamless transition, making it feel as if your waters merge with the sky or sea. Or the water can merely appear to drop off, vanishing over the pool’s edge. This design element not only enhances the visual appeal of the property but also offers a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape.

Unique Design Features

Negative edge pools are custom-designed and tailored to each property. Working closely with the property owners and their design team,  a concept is created according to personal preferences, style, and unique site conditions. Some key design features of negative edge pools include:

  • Vanishing Edge Pool Designs: The defining characteristic of a disappearing edge pool is the edge that appears to, as this design type’s namesake states, vanish or disappear into the landscape. This edge can be designed utilizing either straight lines, free-form curves, or curvilinear shapes.
  • Infinity Edge Pool Designs: Infinity edge pool designs are virtually identical in concept to a vanishing edge pool. The key difference is the scenic backdrop of the infinity edge pool. If you’re overlooking the ocean, this design highlights the continuation of water into the horizon, creating an infinite visual line. Vanishing edges and infinity edges are both luxurious and awe-inspiring features that elevate the aesthetic of any pool space.
  • Catch Basins: Where does all of the water go once it falls over the pool’s edge? The water that overflows from the vanishing edge, or infinity edge, is collected in a catch basin or trough, which is located below the pool’s water surface. This basin is designed to recirculate the water back into the pool, maintaining a consistent water level.

When thinking of the term “catch basin”, it doesn’t sound very appealing. Especially when the infinity or vanishing edge pool designs are so spectacular. But there are some amazing ways to make the catch basin side of the pool have a different wow factor than the rest of the pool. It can be like having another amenity!

For instance, for the pool wall where the water spills over – the exterior fascia of this wall can materialize into its own magnificent water feature. For example, applying a stacked stone material to the negative edge feature’s wall exterior creates a visual and auditory delight. Imagine water gently spilling down this wall, trickling over each protruding stone, falling into the catch basin, creating an opulent space to relax around. You can also consider adding other elements such as a luxurious sitting area with a firepit – let your imagination run wild!

Benefits of Negative Edge Pools

Beyond their stunning aesthetics, negative edge pools offer several benefits:

  1. Enhanced Views: The design of infinity pools, or vanishing edge pools, maximizes the surrounding views, making them ideal for properties located in scenic areas.
  2. Unique Experience: The seamless blend of water with the natural environment makes swimming in a negative edge pool a unique experience that enhances relaxation and enjoyment.
  3. Increased Property Value: The addition of an infinity pool can significantly increase the value of a property. Its luxurious appeal and unique design make it an attractive feature for potential buyers.

Considerations for Installation

While negative edge pools offer many advantages, there are several factors to consider before design and installation, such as the building site. Is there an ideal location for a negative edge pool? The answer is that it’s in the eye of the beholder as to whether or not a negative edge pool is advantageous.

Stating the obvious, any scenic nature backdrop is ideal to get the desired infinity edge or disappearing edge effect. However, properties with flat terrains can have a negative edge pool designed to fit your needs with additional engineering and elevated pool design considerations.

Pricing may also influence your decision. Due to their luxurious designs and the potential need for additional engineering, infinity pools will be more expensive to construct and maintain than traditional inground pools.

Lastly, consider your pool maintenance options. The catch basin and overflow system require regular maintenance to ensure proper function. Infinity pool owners should ensure they have enlisted a trusted professional pool maintenance team to keep their retreat in tip-top shape.
