Adult swim is nice. But remember, pools can also be a source of endless joy and relaxation for the entire family! This includes our little guppies and furry friends, too. With these less experienced swimmers joining the fun, prioritizing safety in your pool environment is more important than ever. By implementing specific measures and considering your unique needs, we can design and build a safe and enjoyable pool experience for everyone.
Pool Safety Measures For Children and Pets
Our team at Aqua Blue Pools is committed to working closely with homeowners and commercial clients to create pools that are as safe and functional as they are aesthetically pleasing. To ensure the well-being of all-legged swimmers, your custom pool builder will plan for certain pool safety measures. Common features include the following:
Secure Pool Barriers and Enclosures
The first step in creating a safe pool environment is to install proper pool barriers and enclosures. A sturdy fence with self-latching gates is a simple choice to keep little ones and curious pets from accessing the pool unsupervised.
Building code requires pool fences be at least four feet high from finish ground level when standing outside of the pool area, without any footholds or gaps that could entice adventurous explorers. When standing outside of the pool area, there can be no more than a two-inch gap from the bottom of the fence to grade. Regularly inspect your fence for wear and tear, and mend any weak spots promptly. There are more requirements for pool enclosures that are not listed here and it’s recommended you refer to your local building codes for information.
Pool Safety Covers and Alarms
Pool safety covers and drain covers are valuable additions that enhance the safety of your pool. A pool safety cover provides a secure barrier over the pool’s surface, preventing accidental falls. Additionally, drain covers are crucial in preventing entrapment accidents, ensuring that pool play remains carefree and safe. When choosing a pool cover, ensure options are designed with safety in mind and capable of supporting the weight of children or pets.
Ladders and Sloping Entrances
Well-placed ladders or gently sloping designs, such as those of zero-entry pools, simplify entering and exiting the water. When choosing fastened ladders, consider those with non-slip steps to ensure easy use. These units should also be placed opposite the shallow end to create accessible exits in all depths.
Pool Alarms
Pool alarms are a valuable pool safety addition providing extra protection and peace of mind. With different types available, such as gate alarms, surface wave sensors or underwater motion sensors, pool alarms can detect unauthorized access, surface disturbances, and underwater movement.
By installing a pool alarm and following the manufacturer’s instructions, you can enhance pool safety and prevent accidents, ensuring a secure swimming environment for all.
Proper Flotation and First Aid Equipment
Finally, ensure you’re always prepared with proper flotation devices and well-stocked first aid kits nearby. Life rings, swim boards and floatation noodles provide extra reassurance in case of emergencies by allowing you to swiftly lend a helping hand.
Familiarize yourself with basic CPR techniques and water rescue skills, and encourage others in your household to do the same. With these friendly tools at your fingertips, you’ll be ready to confidently handle any unexpected situations.
